CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

OH, BUGGER

Luxor ricocheted with an explosive entrance into the mortal realm, her high-pitched screams sending a flurry of hummingbirds scattering from the trees. She outstretched her flailing arms and cover her face instinctively anticipating the worst kind of pain. Unless the lake had thawed in her absence, the ground or trees were the only other options.

Harsh flesh softened her blow underneath, and she imagined a dead swan. That wouldn’t be any better option either. Strong arms circled her waist, and she inhaled a woodsy forest; raw and real.

Hunter.

A pure magnetic forced them together and generated a dose of electricity, both bodies coming lax. Luxor melted into him and gripped on tight, digging her nails into his back. She ignored the low groan in her ear, and peering up she locked eyes with her toffee eyed boy. Her breath hitched.

No, not hers anymore.

Hey, Angel. He clasped her jaw and thumbed over her cheek, light as a feather, his gaze never wavering.

"Don’t let me go.”

A clearing of a throat broke the blissful moment. Xavier wore a multi-layered expression, on the surface he glared but beneath those pale blue eyes there was undeniable hurt.

Luxor slid down Hunter earning another groan, this one more anguished than the other. He winced and rubbed his inner thigh.

Oops sorry.

"I'm stumped, there are no fractures at all." Hunter rose to his knees and smoothed over the invisible line where she was plunged into.

She stepped to Xavier and lightly wrapped her hands around his waist. Glorious sunshine. "It's great to see you again too," she mumbled into his chest. He stroked her hair and held on for a fraction too long.

Luxor let her arms drop and he released her. She was aware of how it was perceived, but didn't care, as far as she was concerned there was no cheating, and after all she’d been through, she needed all the comfort in the world.

Snow started to float and she hugged her mid-section as a shiver snaked up across her skin, the harsh after-effects of the ocean drop injecting little shocks with every flake.

Why couldn't I have been thrown into the sky?

Luxor held her complaints to herself, the gloomy reality a welcome change from a utopian society a target was on her head. She kneeled to confirm Hunter’s observation and ran a finger over to the precise place the opening occurred. Circling the rim, she dropped a stone to the bottom, a plip sounding back.

“Bloody weird,” she murmured. Rumbles grew louder behind her, and when she turned over her shoulder the two boys exchanged furtive glances. "What's wrong?"

"You're talking in front of me." Hunter said.

"How?" Xavier concurred.

Luxor crinkled her brow. "Long story. Rain check?" She assumed with all the arguing with Stel, her fear of Hunter laid on the bottom of the rung and her lack of speech became a non-issue.

The act of evoking Evie's spirit and then her body being possessed wasn't something that could be explained lightly. It needed to be in depth so she could properly understand it herself.
